Which Resolution Should You Download?
Thumbnails download in YouTube native JPEG format, the same file YouTube CDN serves directly from i.ytimg.com. Picknar targets maxresdefault.jpg first. When that file does not exist for a video, the tool steps down the chain automatically so you always get the best version YouTube has stored.

Why Picknar Gets 4K When Most Tools Do Not
Most thumbnail tools only request hqdefault.jpg, YouTube standard 1280x720 file. We request maxresdefault.jpg first.
YouTube only generates maxresdefault when the creator uploaded a custom thumbnail at 1920x1080. Auto-generated thumbnails, where YouTube picks a frame from the video, always cap at 1280x720. Many videos uploaded before 2015 also lack MaxRes. That is not a Picknar limitation. It is YouTube CDN.
When 4K is not available, Picknar falls back automatically. The chain runs maxresdefault to hqdefault to sddefault, so whatever YouTube has stored, you get it.
